Taking a boating holiday in Scotland along the Caledonian Canal is relaxing and interesting. If you start your holiday in Inverness, which is the northernmost point of the canal, you can easily spend a day exploring the city. The city of Inverness, with 70,000 inhabitants, has changed to city status in 2001 and is among the top five to life in Britain about the quality of life. It is also the fastest growing city, with new technologies replace the distillation traditional whiskey as changes in employment.

Local attractions include the castle of Inverness, overlooking the city. Dating back centuries, the current building was designed by William Burn and constructed in 1836. He has served as a prison in the past but now houses the Sheriff Courts. There is a link to Bonnie Prince Charlie, with a statue of the girl that helped, Flora MacDonald and his dog outside the court buildings.

Fort Augustus himself, built as a result of the Jacobite uprising in 1715 and named after the king's son. The child, later named the Duke of Cumberland, became infamous as the murderer of men Bonnie Prince Charlie at Culloden in 1745. A great heritage center tells you everything about that time and how the clans lived around this area. Worth a visit as is a stroll through the well-kept houses in the village. The canal goes right through linking to other Loch Ness, Loch Oich that provides a great place to see all the sights.
