Warner Brothers prequel "to the" Exorcist "without doubt, sent to hell franchise-in-part of the basket. This time, for now The priest begins to sing "Christ the power of forces", one almost expected Austin Powers to blurt out: "God for the love of the Mini-Me, quit humping the laser! "
Not for lack of attempts to "The Exorcist: The Beginning" fails. Rather, it is so difficult that the movie scary finally becomes blatantly overdone. Even Al Roker could burn a steak as thoroughly as this film is over.
Do we really need watch a child that graphically torn by wild hyenas to express the concept of terror? How many "scary" things can go out on us before recognizing that it is nothing more than a trip to the carnival haunted house, without the cigarette-smoking man who takes the tickets? How do many flashbacks we need to see a Nazi shooting a young Jewish woman in the head?
The latter scene, repeated infinitem announcement was the explanation of how Father Merrin Lancaster, played by Stellan Skarsgard, loses his faith. The screenwriters apparently raised the hackneyed argument of thousands of police films in the development of character Father Merrin: he is the "bad cop" who is ready to give his badge, um, neck, only to have one last push case with him.
Merrin is sent to a village in Kenya to find (eghast!) Yet another lost priceless artifact hidden powers exercised. Where is Indiana Jones when need? And when Merrin is reduced to an underground Byzantine era church in Kenya, only thing missing to complete the Raiders "the Ark" rip-off is the fedora and whip. In this case, snakes are replaced by flies.
The "good cop" is the young priest, Father Francis (James D'Arcy). In fact, the "good cop" has been sent to protect the interests of the Vatican, making sure that no one discovers the Vatican lies in literally covering the site Satan's fall to earth from the War in Heaven.
The fleeting moments in the prequel even remotely feels like the original film where we see sexy blonde doctor (Izabella Scorupco) possessed Linda Blair wing. Previously we Scorupco character out of the shower early and walking home dripping wet, no nothing but a towel covering his statue Aphrodite.
As an unintended consequence, when the sexy doctor finally let the devil in and he is speaking with a mouth so insignificant that almost want the priest to turn to the dark side just so they can get Jiggy with him. Could not the fallen priest have waited a little longer to rediscover their faith before saving the temptations of the flesh? Not even so much as an erection? Dammit!
Skarsgard acting is really good. It's kind Russell Crowe in a poor man. But the film Skarsgard have fallen much further into the abyss of what it does.
What would it take to fix "The Beginning "? Despite being awash in Catholic imagery," Exorcist "desperately needs a priest, a theologian, a profound thought, a screenwriter. The film needed a writer able to really explore the existence of evil existence.
If you're going to venture into the hidden images, such as the use excessive crucifixes upside down, then why not do it in a way that demonstrates a deep knowledge of the unseen? This film could have benefited by example, a thorough examination of "full Israeli Regardie rituals of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn."
If you're going to suggest a Manichean struggle between the cosmic forces of light and darkness, then show us that "war in heaven" and explain its relevance. If we are going to show underground caverns, where the devil was thrown up, Why do not recall the mythology of the Book of Enoch or the Sumerians, and cast it as a "foreign gentleman" subject?
If you're going to suggest that evil has no objective existence, but only exists in the human psyche, why not explore the roots of these ideas? After all, the very source of all the madness about the devil, the book of Revelation, has been decoded in the modern world. James M. Pryse issued in 1910 a translation and commentary on the Apocalypse, he made clear that the book was not a secret history of the future, but a kind of cleverly disguised psychological treaty.
If creators 'The Exorcist: The Beginning' realized that the content of Plato's cave is entirely in the place of his own skull (Golgotha), then would not have gone to great lengths to put it somewhere under the church hiding in Kenya. But then Plato would have had even more fun satire in the film "Mystery Science Theater 3000" fashion.
