Location of the levels in tanks and silos with infrared thermal imaging

Background

Instrumentation for the location of levels in tanks and silos is often unreliable. The need for accurate information on levels remains necessary, or even criticism, in many cases. For example, in a situation of a thermograph was used to verify a level of liquid in a large storage tank along Gulf Coast before the arrival of a tanker. In continuous processes where the operator must know a lot of available capacity in each tank. , No production of knowledge may be hampered or if overflow occurs, a potentially dangerous situation created. Sometimes the level that indicates the traditional tools simply can not determine the levels. Foams and waxes, for example, are difficult to detect and measure accurately.

The paper mill experienced a situation where a tank was believed to be improperly sized when in reality it was just filled with foam instead of liquid. De-foaming the tank was more cost effective than replacing it unnecessarily bigger one! A petrochemical plant hired a contractor to clean a large tank. When the door opened gateways, sludge that had settled to a depth above the door, etc. building exuded a dangerous situation and the environment harmful. For industries that need to comply with safety and process requirements of OSHA 1910, thermography can be a particularly cost-effective tool to use. Each of these situations represents a real example in the infrared could have been used to provide or verify information on the internal state of the tank or silo. Location level and checking the instruments indicating the level remains an important need in the industry.

Image thermal, as a method to determine levels

Most times, the materials in a tank or silo, whether solid, liquids or gases, behave differently when subjected to a thermal transition. The materials often have different characteristics of thermal capacity. The gases tend to change temperature much more readily than liquids. Water, for example, has a thermal capacity which is 3500 times greater than air. A Btu of energy added to a cubic foot of water will increase its temperature 0.016 ° F, while the same energy that adds the same volume of air results in an increase of 55 ° C!

While the heat capacity of solids may be similar to liquids, the way in which heat is transferred distinguishes them with an infrared camera. The solids and sludges, are influenced mainly by heat transfer by conduction. Liquid (no solids), moreover, are strongly influenced by the convection heat transfer. The result is that the solid layer in close contact with the tank wall, although its thermal capacity often high, heat and cool faster than the portion of liquid because they do not mingle in the same way that the liquid does. One question is whether the tank / silo is half full or half empty. This determination requires further research by the investigator of the materials, housing container and environmental circumstances.

Environmental conditions necessary

Key to the determination levels is to observe the tank or silo during a thermal transition. If viewed with an infrared camera while in a state of thermal equilibrium with the environment, differences are not seen. In fact, tanks and silos are full or empty often appear identical, with no indication of a level. Curiously, it is difficult to find tanks and silos that are not in transition, though not always produce a detectable image. Outdoors, the day / night cycle, often provides enough power for create detectable differences. Even inside, the changes in air temperature is often sufficient to make apparent thermal transitions. Environmental conditions may have a direct influence on the ability to detect the levels of thermal imaging. Wind, precipitation, ambient air temperature and solar load can, for separately or together, to create or deny the differences on the surface. Other factors to consider include the temperature of the products are stored or moved through the tanks and silos, and the rates at which they are moving. Many tanks are isolated, although rarely to the extent that will always and completely erase the thermal patterns caused by different levels. When the insulation is covered with unpainted metal coating, care must be taken to increase the emissivity, as discussed below.

Thermal patterns of the materials in different ways

The most obvious pattern is the result of a gas-liquid interface /. In a situation when the product is not heated, the gas usually responds quickly to the transient situation, while the liquid responds more slowly. During the day, the gas can be hotter than the liquid, at night it is cooler. Liquid / sludge relationships may be more difficult to discern. Increased transient may be necessary to create a detectable image. Thin layers of sludge also can be indistinguishable from the bottom of the tank. The accumulation of sludge in the center tank (ie not in contact with the wall) is simply not detectable, despite the accumulation of product on the side walls is often quite obvious. Foams are is often difficult to distinguish from the liquids, but may be similar to gases. Care must be taken to push the tank through a rapid thermal transition to reveal the thermal differences. Locating levels associated with floating materials such as waxes, normally require more persistence, skill and higher heat transfer rate of transition, but the results can be surprising.

Whether or not liquid / liquid interfaces, such as a mixture of oil and water, can be viewed differently depending on their thermal capacity and to a lesser extent, its viscosity. Simple experiments suggest that it is fairly easy to locate the interface of oil and water, but more work needs to be done in the field to validate this technique. Some solids such as coal ash, plastic pellets, lime powder and wood shavings, they behave as liquids and are designated as "solid fluidized. Although heat transfer in these fields is still mainly drivers, mass transfer of heat by the movement of material can be important. For example, hot ashes or lime is blown into a silo warmth Process for the silo. Solid Fluidized tend to behave similarly to fluids in the way they respond to gravity, except for the fact that they can "bridge" across the areas where liquids normally would not. In fact, the location of the transition material is fluidized use value of thermography.

ISSUES to be Considered

Some tanks are covered with coating, often unpainted aluminum or Stainless Steel. The detection of the kind of fine temperature differences necessary to disclose the levels on the surfaces of this type with low-emissivity and high reflectivity is almost impossible. The difference is not simply radiant detectable. The problem, however, is most often easily corrected by applying high emissivity target vertical. A painted stripe or a piece of tape on the tank, for example, can work very well. For working outdoors, use colors clear and / or the side of the shadow of equipment to prevent solar loading. Occasionally the tanks are heated or cooled with a jacket. These often cause thermal imaging cameras to be ineffective for the determination of level. In some cases it may be possible to see the structural stand-off between the wall of the tank and jacket.

Tanks that are isolated can also be difficult. Fortunately, the insulation levels are usually not large enough to see opposing levels, but that the isolation of the changes of thermal dynamics in a detectable point may not be evident as often. Simple techniques, explained below, can help improve the thermal differences so that they can be detected. In some cases it may be possible to cut small "plugs" of insulation at various levels reveal more clearly the tank temperatures. Although the solar load can improve a model, more heat can often cause subtle patterns in a tank or silo be obliterated. You may be able to see the container on the side of the shade, but sometimes it may be necessary to return when the sun comes down affect. Spheroid tanks provide another type of challenge, seen from a point, the reflection coefficient varies greatly across its curved surface. It is not uncommon to find the tops of the cooling tanks, while appearing at the bottom appear warmer, too often, both patterns are related more to the reflectance of emissions. Tanks located inside buildings are not subject to diurnal heating cycles. Some thermal cycles are usually performed, but not sufficient for differences detectable radiation. Again, simple techniques, explained below, can be used very effectively to enhance surface temperature differences.

Techniques simple to improve thermal patterns

Often thermal patterns can be improved by using simple techniques to increase transient heat transfer. It may be possible to add heating or cooling or directly on the surface of the tank / silo. The gas in the tank head responds faster than the liquid. As mentioned above, the solids can respond in a more complex way. An industrial hot air gun can used to heat the surface of small and medium tanks. Heating even a narrow area may reveal a level dramatically. Cooling can be ensured only by wetting the surface with water. As evaporation occurs, cooling units and heat flux reveals transient or improved levels. While these not viable techniques for large tanks, is not the case. Cooling, in particular, can easily be supplied with a stream of cold water in a hose the surface of the tank. Add the time for cooling to take effect and in many cases, the picture becomes clear.

Conclusion

Many industries have a critical need to determine the levels in tanks and silos, and to validate the existing level indication instruments. Infrared thermal imaging provides a simple, cost-effective means of doing. Conditions often allow the levels seen at almost any time of day or night and throughout the year. While the levels are not always immediately obvious, persistent, careful and infrared images of simple breeding techniques often can produce remarkable results.
