Amtrak northeast from Las Vegas with a 9 year old?

I am thinking of taking my 9 year old son to Las Vegas this summer to see the Hoover Dam. It is a rail fan so I'm thinking of doing the Amtrak. Amtrak serves not know BT and we have to take a bus from Kingman, Arizona. I've done my homework so far. Has anyone taken a cross-country trip on Amtrak lately and what are your thoughts? Our family did in 1966 when things were on the tracks a little different in the trains are. I've been to Las Vegas many times but have always flown. Also moved several times but never been on a train in different passenger trains in and out of Manhattan. Thanks for any suggestions and / or comments.

I have taken the train from the East Coast to west and back twice in the past 7 years and loved both trips. I went westward across Canada in one of Sacramento TiiME and returned to Chicago and DC. The second time I went westward through from Chicago to Seattle and then took the train to Los Angeles, then back across the country to the path of South Florida and back to the East Coast. I had a bed most of these trips, in particular the parts of the West Coast to Chicago and Los Angeles to Florida. That is called "first class" and includes 3 meals day, large meals too. The bed was perfectly normal for one person, and may be well for you and a 9 year old, but its a bit crowded for two. The more Bigger is better bed for two people and it has a pottie and a facebowl. Otherwise, just walk down the aisle of his coach. You do the same for showers, which are sufficient and towels. There is plenty of room for luggage in the room, but had a luggage compartment in the car if not see your stuff. I usually just put the bag with most of my stuff in the boot and had a backpack with toiletries and underwear couple in it. I would like to retrieve more clothes for my big bag when I needed them. I suggest that in some films of regular sleep, so if you have to leave the room at night when you go for a shower, you do not have to put on clothes, or go in a nightgown. You may want to look for a rental car in Az instead of bus. I thought the train to drop you at Barstow, CA Las Vegas. Its only about 2 hours to Las Vegas from there.
