Why only the metal ions (sodium ions Na 1 +) initial NaNO3 salt produces color in a flame test?

Due that the NO3 is decomposed during combustion exhibits metallic Na leaving the property during the flame test. Are you getting a yellow for this test in particular? Good luck!
