The New York Times to Obtain a Dodge Sprinter Plug-in Hybrid

The New York Times will be first on the East Coast of the United States to receive the first medium right plug-in hybrid is the first of its kind in the State of New York. This is part of a trade show fleet performance and the process of technology assessment that is being conducted by DaimlerChrysler.

The Dodge Sprinter plug-in hybrid was a joint venture between DaimlerChrysler, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and Con Edison. The association formed to test and evaluate plug-in hybrid technology in a real driving environment. DaimlerChrysler, maker of Jeep and all its components as The Jeep seat covers is the first automaker to test plug-in technology hybrid, with the participation of customers in the United States. EPRI and research studies indicate that fleet applications provide the perfect opportunity for initial demonstrations of plug-in hybrids.

According to Tom Lombardo, Vice President, Production, The New York Times, "We are proud that The New York Times is the first major entity in the State of New York with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in our fleet. When we were approached by NYPA and DaimlerChrysler, knew immediately I wanted to participate. We are delighted to support the use of clean energy, sustainability and advances in plug-in hybrid technology.

Randolph S. Price, Vice President of Environment, Health and Safety, Con Edison said: "Con Edison research and development group recognizes the potential that plug in electric hybrid vehicles have to make a profound impact on the environment. Electric vehicles have the potential to drastically reduce the dependence of our country from foreign oil and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. As the electricity supplier of nine million New Yorkers, Con Edison is in search of new, environment for grid applications.

Plug-in hybrids are vehicles that can run on all electric or hybrid mode. They have large compared to traditional hybrid batteries that allow them to travel long distances by the only means electricity. The Dodge Sprinter plug-in hybrid has a battery that lets you travel 20 miles. Short urban routes with a lot of stop-and-go driving the vehicle can work for most of the day with zero emissions. And when in hybrid mode the vehicle works like a traditional hybrid, with better fuel economy and low emissions that is comparable to a conventional diesel or petrol cars.
