MacBook Stuck on gray Apple screen and Spinning Gear. Help?

I have my MacBook in October 2008 worked fine until an update screen approached software. I agreed and all went smoothly until it went to restart my computer. Now every time I try to turn it on, do not pass the screen gray with dark gray apple and spinning gear. Help? I've tried:. Restart. Restart in Safe Mode. Remove the battery. My CD-ROM that came with the MacBook is in no part is, of course. Any suggestions? I really like to stay outside the Apple store if possible. Thank you!

Without the DVD that came with it, not be able to start another drive and diagnose or repair the internal drive. You need to find, or make an appointment at the Genius Bar of your nearest Apple Store for them I do for you.
