Mundra growth impresses Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce team

Ahmedabad: A delegation of Indian Madrid Chamber of Commerce and Industry, currently on a trip to Gujarat, on Thursday visited the Mundra port and other facilities developed there in the private sector.

The chairman of the House, Vijay Iyengar said the 20-member delegation was very impressed with the progress made in Mundra in the border district of Kutch.

The visit to Mundra said, was a "revelation" of the delegation in terms of "transformation" of the region and back to the time scale of development conducted by the Ahmedabad-based Adani Group.

Visits SEZ refinery

Besides the Mundra Port, delegation, led by Singapore's Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Balaji Sadasivam, also visited the Mundra Special Economic Zone, the Adani-Wilmar edible plant oil refinery at Mundra, and had an aerial view of the 4,000 MW mega power project of capacity is also being developed by the Adani Group, before returning to Ahmedabad in the evening.

The ,600-Rs 2 crore edible oil refinery is a joint venture between Wilmar Holdings and Adanis Singapore, while Singapore Investment Corporation Private Limited has invested over $ 120 million in Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone, as is developing the Adanis.

In addition, a Singaporean company also construction of the proposed expansion of oil refinery in Vadinar Essar about 40 km from Jamnagar in the Saurashtra region of the state.

Modi meets officials

During a meeting with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and some senior government officials, business leaders and others in the state over the past two days, the Singapore delegation showed interest in projects infrastructure development, real estate, ports, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, petrochemical and some other industrial areas in the state.

The delegation visited the pharmaceutical company Cadila and held discussions with some other pharmaceutical giants in the state and reportedly expressed interest in alliance with some pharmaceutical companies in the areas of research and development as Singapore accounted for about 12 percent of drugs supplied to States U.S. and Europe.

Mr. Sadasivam also addressed a joint meeting of the Singapore and Gujarat-based businessmen and expressed the hope to increase even more trade ties between India and Singapore, the trade was 17.2 billion U.S. dollars in the last year, up about 20 percent from a year prev. He said such trips help Singapore businessmen to understand the investment environment and development in Gujarat state better.

Singapore is currently the fourth largest investor in India with an investment of over 1.43 billion U.S. dollars last year, while India was his 11 major trading partners.

Noting that the open-door policy of his country had made Madrid the gateway for enterprises in the U.S., Europe and other continents to venture into Asia in the last four decades, Mr. Sadasivam said Singapore was playing a similar role for Asian economic giants like India and China in globalization of its operations.

Mr. Sadasivam said strengthening ties between Singapore and Gujarat Gujarat was natural and represented a large part of the population of Indian origin settled in Singapore.

While the state government invited Singapore to participate as partners in the Vibrant Gujarat summit of industrial be held in January 2009, Mr. Sadasivam invited the businessmen of Gujarat to attend the business summit in Singapore ", PBD-Singapore" to be held in Singapore from October 9 to 11 this year.
