The decline of the Ottoman Empire, the old sick man of Europe

The Eastern Question was the collective term for the problems in Southeast Europe by the weakness of the Ottoman Turkish Empire and the rivalry of their successors. At the peak of the Ottoman Empire, which stretched from the Persian Gulf to the gates of Vienna, Austria, But in 1870 is commonly referred to as 'the sick man of Europe'. The reasons for their decline can be attributed to the leaf of the Turkish army in total decay, the delay of the economy Turkey and the corrupt and inefficient nature of the administrative system of Turkey. Basically, the Ottoman Empire had been maintained for all intensive purposes a medieval state. These difficulties were compounded by the rise of Balkan nationalism. This problem is felt to involve the major powers in the region in its rivalry in the Balkans led to a series of conflicts in the nineteenth century and contributed substantially to the outbreak of the First World War. Russia is seen as protectors of the Slavs Southeast Europe, Austrians want to annex land and also dampen nationalism that the Balkans is not extended to his own empire and Britain distrusted Russian attempts to control the Dardanelles fear that their route to India was threatened and therefore support for Turkey against the invasion of Russia. In 1875, riots began in Bosnia-Herzegovina, a province in the Balkans in the Turkish Empire. Mr. Muslims had been abusing their Christian peasants leading to mass riots. Fearing a drop in full-scale war, the Austrian Foreign Minister Andrassy sent a note to the sultan demanding a series of reforms in the Balkans. All powers signed the "Andrassy Note," but the Turks decided to ignore it and continued their policy of repression of riots in 1876 had spread to Bulgaria. Serbia and Montenegro decided to use the situation to attack Turkey with the hope of acquiring territory.

The great powers met in Berlin, the preparation of a memorandum in which he renewed their initial demands and threatened to take action if improvements were not forthcoming. However, because of British fears the intentions of Russia refused to sign the Memorandum of Berlin, who encouraged the Turks to increase its repressive measures. But the Turks drove the boat very far when one of its irregular armies, the Bashi-bazouks massacres committed in Bulgaria, the British withdrew all support. Russia gave free rein and led him, attacking Turkey and initially sweep everything in its path before been held in Plevna. Sympathy in Britain turned back for the Turks and for a time, a conflict between Russia and Britain seemed to be in the cards, but the Russians and Turks sued for peace, the Treaty of San Stefano. The Treaty of San Stefano autonomous state created the great Bulgaria, confirmed the independence of Romania, Serbia and Montenegro and territorial gains granted to Serbia and Montenegro. Great Britain considers his suspicions, as evidenced the existence of which in his opinion Bulgaria would prove a Russian satellite. Britain with the support of Austria pressed Russia to accept the Treaty to be revised in Congress Berlin, 1878. Chaired by Bismarck, it was decided that Bulgaria was to be divided, the parts are returned to Turkey, Britain annexed Cyprus, Russia annexed South Austria Bessarabia and occupied and administered Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Congress was decisive, as it marked the beginning of a resurgence in nationalism in the Balkans and the beginning of motion Europe split into two camps.

However, Bulgarian proved anti-Russian and contrary to the fears of the countries of Great Britain did not become a Russian satellite. In fact, more closely allied to Britain and France fueling expectations that Russia would invade to right the wrong, but this was prevented by the Dual Alliance which claimed that the Germans come to the aid of the Austrians that they were safe to be offended by any motion of Russia's war against Bulgaria. The crisis also had the effect of creating links between Russia and France to avoid isolation complete. This had the effect of strengthening the gap between the two sides though Britain remained without compromise to any and from 1888 it began to drift in Turkey in fact the creation of links with Russia. Britain no longer need to worry about Russia interfere with their trade route to India, having occupied Egypt in 1882 and Cyprus in 1878. Germany began to ally with Turkey, the alliance is rooted in the rise of the Young Turks in 1908. The attempts of the Young Turks to Turkish restore control over the Balkans led Austria to annex Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia angered Russia in the process. The Serbs believed that Bosnia-Herzegovina, because was a predominantly Slavic province and that should be incorporated in your state. The increased terrorist activities culminating in the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, gout final that led directly to the First World War. The strident nationalism of the Young Turks movement and its continued repression of other nationalities in the empire was the creation of the Balkan League, a coalition of Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria, and Montenegro. In 1912 he attacked the league and won victories against the army immediate Turkish Turkey driving almost entirely outside of Europe, leaving only part of Constantinople and Thrace under their control. However, the League turned against each other because of disputes over who deserved what part of the "sick man of Europe". During the First World War, Turkey and Bulgaira sided with the Alliance, Treaty of Lausanne (1923) Turkey ceded all rights to non-Turk of the old Ottoman lands thus ending the problematic issue of the East.
