A MODEL OF SOFT SYSTEMS BUSINESS ETHICS

Before making a decision or implement change or introduce a new system I am sure you consider the five "E":

Effectiveness (does it work at all?)

Efficiency (Will it work with minimum resources?)

Efficacy (Does it contribute to the company?)

Ethics or morality (good morally?)

Elegance (is beautiful?)

Let's talk about the fourth E "- Ethics.

There is an ethical dimension to every decision. Every time a human being, or entity, intervenes in the life of another human being, or entity directly or indirectly, a situation ethics arises.

There is a story, probably apocryphal, which illustrates this.

There was a cyclonic storm and millions of fish were washed ashore and were struggling for life at the beach. A man came to the beach and patiently began to pick up the fish one by one, and throw them back into the sea. A passerby asked fun, what difference would it make, to which the man pointed to the fish in his hand and said, "Ask this fish?"

Thus we see that seemingly routine decisions, that the organization level not seem to have major ethics have ethical significance large individual level.

Some people believe that ethics is of little interest to people business. "Ethics is Ethics" and "Business is business" is saying.

Thus many upwardly mobile managers of today tend to rationalize when faced with an ethical dilemma and take the position that should take several hats of ethics and dress up with three codes various conflicts of ethics: a code applicable to professional or technical aspects of their work (professional or technical Ethics), another for his conduct business (Business Ethics), and a third code of ethics for his life (Personal Ethics).

This leads to the development of ethics schizophrenic personality in which the individual can strive for professional excellence and high ethical standards for oneself and within the organization, but resort to unethical practices to succeed in business at any price.

This Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde approach is at the heart of many ethical dilemmas in managerial decision making.

Each person, entity, group, institution or constituency that may be affected by the decision is an "interested party" with a moral right decisions.

This stakeholder concept provides a systematic way of perceiving and resolving the various interests involved in our ethical decision making.

There is an ethical dimension to every decision.

Thus, none of its decisions that affect other people, have ethical implications, and practically all important decisions reflect your sensitivity and commitment to ethics.

In summary, while doing their job in their workplace, what are the ethical, how to deal with superiors, peers, subordinates, customers and other stakeholders connected with their work.

The different stakeholders have different ethical perspectives.

For example, take the case of organizational romance.

Whereas, some organizations [and stakeholders] may feel that there is nothing ethically wrong with workplace romance and many even encourage organizational romance or marriage with their peers, giving several benefits and incentives, some others may discourage or even prohibit workplace-romance. By Of course, sexual harassment is universally considered unethical.

A useful technique for resolving these ethical dilemmas is the model CATWOE Adapted from Management.

Ethical dilemmas occur due to mismatch in ethical perspectives of various stakeholders in the ethical situation.

A CATWOE analysis helps the manager to identify all the actors involved and their respective decision points ethically.

CATWOE is an acronym to categorize various stakeholders:

CATWOE MODEL

C = CUSTOMERS, CLIENTS OR THE DECISION

A = actors, agents or come from the decisions

T = transformation processes, the decision maker

W = Weltanschauung, Worldview predominantly HELD

O = owner / PROPERTY

E = ENVIRONMENT / ENVIRONMENTAL Imposiciones

To elaborate a bit:

C: The "system customers." In this context, 'customers', those on the receiving end of whatever the system is doing. "It is clear from its definition "C" of who will win or lose from your decision?

A: The "actors", ie those who actually carried out the activities envisaged in the notional system being defined.

T: The "transformation process". What causes the system to the inputs to turn them into products?

W: Weltanschauung – The "world view" behind root definition. Putting the system in its wider context can highlight the consequences of the overall system. For example, the system can be in place to help to make the world a safer environment, and the consequences of system failure could be significant pollution.

O: The "owner (s) '- ie those who have enough formal power to stop the existing system if they so wish (although I do not usually do this).

E: The "environmental constraints. These include such things as ethical limits, regulations, financial constraints, limitations resources, the limits set by the terms of reference, and so on.

Cardinal aspects of ethical decision making

All decisions should take into account and reflect a concern for the interests and welfare of all concerned.

The values and ethical principles are always priority over non-ethical and ethical values and principles

It is ethically appropriate to the violation of an ethical principle only when absolutely needed to advance another true ethical principles, according to the conscience of the decision maker, produced the greatest balance of good over the long term

THE FIVE STEP ETHICAL DECISION MAKING APPROACH

Step Action

1. Identify and classify the parties interested in the situation and understand their CATWOE using ethically

2. Identify your dominant views of ethics

1. Build a network of ethical conflicts, mapping different ethical perspectives [CATWOE - six nodes]

4. Identify Site Chapters in which there is no major conflict can be assumed to exist. These can be removed for ethical decision making model.

5. Concentrate on the chapters where conflict does not exist. Using conflict resolution techniques to achieve "good" for the system

Ethical Decision Making involves the process by which a person evaluates and chooses among alternatives in a manner consistent with their values or ethics.

So when you do an ethical decision you:

(a) Collect and remove the options of ethics

(b) Select the best of several alternatives the ethical competition.

Ethical decision making requires more than a belief in the importance of ethics. It also requires sensitivity to perceive the implications ethical decisions, the ability to evaluate complex, ambiguous and incomplete data and the ability to apply ethical decision making without jeopardizing your career.

Ethical decision making requires three things:

Ethical commitment

Consciousness ethics

Ethical Competence

The model CATWOE will help in the decision of management – in improving the ethical aspect of their managerial, professional and personal decisions.
