Is bottled water better? That is the impression most people, but the truth is that some brands are just as bad – or worse – than tap water.

Normally, producers of bottled water must meet certain federal and state regulations. These are based on standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and similar bodies. But not all manufacturers follow these standards and products such as mineral water, which comes mainly from Europe, are not covered by these standards.

For example, in the 1970s, a survey by the EPA shows that 25 bottled water plants in the United Kingdom States have health deficiencies and samples of their products were contaminated lead and fecal bacteria.

In 1985, a report prepared by the California legislature found that bottlers sometimes kept false records or inadequate the results of water tests, could not control their water source and water samples altered to conceal the pollution.

In another case, carcinogens potential are found in some brands of carbonated water by Consumer Reports.

"People buy bottled water, mainly to protect their health. Unfortunately, many of the same contaminants found in drinking water are also found in bottled water. Heavy metals, solvents, trihalomethanes, and even traces of radioactive materials have been found. Some bottled water ads are fraudulent. The mineral water has been promoted as therapeutic but health claims are unproven and federal regulations do not allow them.
